Region of Interest
In the context of resolution, we have already presented industrial cameras whose resolution is adjustable by software (The Imaging Source One4all cameras).
The corresponding method is called ROI (Region of Interest). Usually, it is not only possible to determine the region's size (and thus the resolution) but also its position. The positive side effect: the amount of image data decreases and thus the images can be transfered with a higher frame rate.
Important: A small region of interest does not only lead to a lower resolution but it also means that the format decreases. This in turn affects the calculation of the focal length of the lens.
